A team from Sheffield International Venues (SIV) working with partners including Sheffield City Council and the Sheftival team, has pinpointed the Don Valley cluster of venues, which includes Don Valley Stadium and Bowl, as a base for Sheffield’s Olympic supporters to gather and watch the action.
Sports fans can watch a huge screen for free showing live events and highlights of London 2012 from 6-10pm on July 30 to August 2 and all day from 9am until 10pm on August 3, 4 and 5.
The big screen will show action from the London 2012 Games every evening while the weekend showings coincide with the biggest concentration of medal events over the three week long sports extravaganza.
Saturday and Sunday will include the finals of the swimming, cycling, rowing, high profile athletics events including the 100m men’s final and most importantly could see Sheffield’s very own Jessica Ennis bid for gold in the heptathlon final.
It is hoped that thousands of Sheffield’s residents will travel to the lower Don Valley to enjoy the performances of Team GB and watch other international sports stars stake their claim for a position on the podium.
SIV’s Sheftival event is set to be the city’s biggest ever festival to combine music and sport.
It comprises of three areas: ‘Sheftival Live’ – a free Olympics viewing zone at Don Valley Stadium, supported by BBC Radio Sheffield. ‘Sheftival of Sport’ at EISS offering free ‘have-a-go’ sports activities, demonstrations and tournaments including rugby, boxing, futsal, hockey and much more.
The ‘Tramlines Main Arena’ stages a music festival and outdoor pop concert featuring music from Rizzle Kicks, Stooshe, Marcus Collins, Lemar, Noisettes, The Lightning Seeds, Macka B, The Beat and many more in Don Valley Bowl. Tickets are required to access this part of Sheftival.
